More Marlin and Rooster today

Louisiana is in town this week. Jamie, Jennifer, Ryan, Melisa, Priscilla and Brighton went out on our 33’ El Nuevo today with Captain Alex and Mate Ramon. It was their second day out fishing, yesterday they mostly got teased by all the Marlin but today they made a come back. The group decided to do a bit of inshore and offshore fishing. Using Rapalla lures and trolling on the Pacific side, they caught 2 Sierra, 1 Yellowtail and 1 Bonito. Heading out to the warmer waters of the sea of Cortez, they used live bait to entice the Marlin that they caught and released. They’re taking tomorrow off so that they can enjoy Cabo’s nightlife but they had so much fun we may see them back on Monday.

Paul spends about six weeks out of the year in Cabo and most of that time fishing. Today he went out on a Panga with Captain Carlos and caught 5 Roosterfish on the sea of Cortez.

Slow day but still lots of play

It was a slow day for all of the boats in the Marina and unfortunately that includes us as well. But for some like Larry and Tobey from Louisiana, the day couldn’t have been better. By 11:30 am their boat was in the slip at the Marina. We at first thought it was because of lack of action but it turned out otherwise. They caught and released 3 Marlin on our 32’ RumRunnin with Javier and Manuel using live bait and trolling on the sea of Cortez in front of Santa Maria beach, a mere three miles from the shore. More time for happy hour now!

The Henry family from Texas went out on a partner boat today and caught and released 4 Roosterfish on the sea of Cortez, also by Santa Maria beach. It was the first time for the two daughters and they did a great job.

Kite Fishing is In

David and his wife Kelley went out today on our 32’ RumRunnin with Javier and Manuel. Using rapalla lures, David and Kelley caught 6 Sierra (Spanish mackerel) and 2 Bonito just a third of a mile from the sea of Cortez shoreline. Water temperatures were between 64 and 66 degrees.

Mike went solo on our 32’ RedBeam with Marcial and Fabian. His wife didn’t feel like fishing but he wasn’t going to let that keep him from getting on the water. They headed east on the sea of Cortez and caught 5 Roosterfish using live bait. After the fifth Rooster Mike wanted to try for a Dorado but instead started a fight with a Marlin, also using live bait. Mike won the fight but used good sportsmanship and released his opponent.

Back for their third and final day of fishing, the St. Martin group headed out to Gordo Banks on the sea of Cortez and caught a Marlin using live bait. All four friends caught a Marlin on this trip and we are especially happy for Pete who celebrated his 70th birthday catching his first Marlin ever. The guys went out on our 28’ ReelRum.

Out on our 33’ El Nuevo with Captain Alex and mate Ramon was the RedRum “Jefe”, John Donovan, his new friend Larry whom he met while sipping mojitos at our favorite restaurant Misiones de Kino, Tobey, Tammy and Chas. They started the trip with Tammy catching a small Dorado which they released after John gave the scared little guy a kiss. They continued on in their search for Marlin and after trolling for several hours trying a variety of spreads and pitching live bait to several Marlin, they decided to try out the kite. After only ten minutes of kite fishing with live bait they got a bite, and then another one. Tammy and Tobey were the lucky anglers that reeled these 160-180 pound babies in, snapped a picture and set them free. Tammy is now a legend at RedRum having been the first person to have caught a fish using our new kite system. Congrats Tammy!!!

Monday/Tuesday Report

How should you celebrate your 70th birthday? Come down to Cabo and fish with your best friends! Pete, his son and two of his friends checked into the Portofino condos on Sunday and were ready to party. They arrived holding Corona’s and made sure we remembered to pick up their Coors. They went fishing with us for their first day this week on Monday aboard our 28’ ReelRum. Pete caught his first 2 Marlin ever with the help of Captain Omar and mate Americo. The first marlin measured 112” and weighed 180 pounds and the second came in at 96” and 140 pounds, both catch and release. They also caught 2 Dorado which they enjoyed for dinner at our favorite restaurant Misiones de Kino along with their tasty house Margaritas.

Out on our 33’ El Nuevo, Troy and five of his friends caught 2 Dorado which they also enjoyed for dinner at Misiones de Kino.

On Nuevo today we had the McClure clan from Co. – they headed out to the 95 spot looking for some dinner for tonight, they landed a nice 35 lb. Dorado that should feed the five of them. They saw a lot of marlin but they just did not want to bite.

Reel rum had our friend Pete, Ken, Joe and Jim onboard for there second day, no luck today, again, they saw a lot of marlin just did not want to bite.

The Red Beam had our friends Jack and Cheryl on a share with Todd Miz and his dad. They too saw lots of marlin, no bite so they headed in shore and got two yellowtail in the 20 pound range and one rooster about 30 lbs.
