Monster Grouper

Today we had great weather in Cabo, high was in the 70's, light breeze and calm seas. Water temps on the Sea of Cortez were in the mid-70's. Two boats headed out today, ReelRum and RumRunnin.

Javier and Marshall headed out on Rum Runnin with John Bailey. John had set up a share before he came to Cabo but his partner never showed. Normally, that would mean more fish for John. The problem was, the Marlin just weren't biting. While the inshore bite is strong, the offshore bite as you know if you have been keeping up, has been slow. Javier said he saw more than a dozen Marlin. Just couldn't get any to get hungry at the right time.

On ReelRum we had Mike Westburg, Amanda and Deborah Rieken. Opting to try their luck inshore, Americo and Cesar headed towards Santa Maria bay on the Sea of Cortez. They started to meter some fish and decided to give it a shot. They certainly picked the right spot with 7 nice Yellowfin slamming their lures and bait over the next 2 hours or so. After a lull in the action, they felt a whopper of a fish take the bait and the battle was on. When it was said and done, a 70-80lb Grouper was on the boat. Check out the photos below. Power of One, plus captain and mate

Right now Omar and Americo, the fantastic crew of our 28’ Californian “ReelRum” are feasting on a late fish lunch next door with their new friend David. Early this morning I asked David what he hoped for out on the water and he answered: “To catch a fish that’s bigger than me.” Someone must have alerted the Marlins and Mako sharks because they hid all day. Unfortunately for the Dorado, Sierra, 11 Yellow Tail and 6 Triggerfish, David didn’t mind going for quantity when the big ones weren’t bitting. Nice work David, thanks for making us proud!

Dorado, a nap, and another Dorado

Most kids are anything but happy when you wake them up before the sun is out. That is unless they know they’re waking up to fish with RedRum. This morning Jack and his little brother, both under the age of twelve greeted me with smiles and excitement. Their dad Bill stopped by our office yesterday to inquire about our charters and decided it was an experience he didn’t want to miss with his boys, and dad. So it ended up being a three generation guy’s trip. This morning they went out with Javier and Manuel on our 32’ RumRunnin and decided to stay inshore so that there would be a lot of action for the kids. Javier took the group out by the lighthouse where the water was a warm 73 degrees. How did the guys do? 12 Sierra strong.

I was surprised to see that everyone in the next group was accounted for upon check-in. Most times when a group of twenty-something’s show up to fish with us they are generally missing one or two...but I guess its only Friday and the weekend is about to unravel. Unfortunately, though they saw quite a few Marlin and Dorado, they weren’t able to convince any to bite. Maybe the guys will have more luck "fishing" tonight ;)

Out on our 28’ ReelRum with Omar and Americo, Ray and Jeffrey took on 2 Dorado and won. They spent their time offshore and it definitely paid off. They even got a nap in, imagine that. Since they don’t plan on eating Dorado sandwiches, omelets and pies for the rest of the week, we packed up most of the fish and are freezing it so that it’s ready for pick-up before they head out to the airport. I only hope that they decide to buy the cooler as I don’t think their wives will appreciate the fishy smell on their clothes if they throw it in the luggage.

Busy Day

It was a big day today with six boats going out and plenty of Sierra and a Dorado coming in.

Out fishing for the second day this week were Dave and Jim Edwards from Texas. On Tuesday they caught a Marlin and Bonito and today they scored a nice sized Dorado. On Tuesday we wondered whether Dave was an horn frog or aggie and it turns out he is an aggie but a great guy despite the fact.

All the way from Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, the Bonnigson group chose to spend their time inshore and came back with 12 Sierra.

Flying solo on the water today was Adam from Maine. I guess not everyone finds hooking 6 Sierra’s a romantic date with the wife but at least he’ll be bringing home some dinner!

Keith and Ray visiting us from Whittier, CA spent the first part of their trip fishing inshore where they caught 9 Sierra. After a great morning they plunged offshore to try to take on some Dorado but it didn’t work out this time; sorry guys!

The Barrett group went out on our partner boat SM7 looking for some big ones but unfortunately only caught a dolphin show. Regardless this group came back all smiles having enjoyed a day on the water and not in the office!

On another partner boat, the Wamsleys from Texas and Australia opted for inshore fishing and brought back 6 Sierra and 2 Bonito which they quickly had prepped for sashimi…yum!

Mari and Lynne from Michigan fished on our 28' ReelRum with Americo and Humberto on April 8th. Here's Mari and one of the Sierra they caught.

Father and Son

Today was a light day for us, with only one boat heading out. Omar and Americo on ReelRum fished with Brian Graves and his son Alex, as well as Brian Biele with his sons Zach and Josh. The boys age's ranged from 5-7 and they all came in SUPER excited to go fishing with their dads. I must say they looked pretty cool in their stylish and safety oriented fishing jackets. As I talked with Brian and Brian we formulated a plan to make sure the boys had a good day on the water and stayed interested. Omar and Americo did great, staying close to shore for the first part of the day catching loads of Sierra. They caught about 10 fish and released another 10. When it was time to head a bit offshore and look for a Marlin or Dorado for the Dad's, the luck ran out. They saw a few fish but couldn't get a bite, and decided to leave well enough alone and head back to the Marina. They stopped by the office to say thanks, and then headed over to the Mango Cantina for some Sierra Ceviche and Sashimi. Good stuff guys. "We saw a lotta Marlin, Ryan"

This was Ramon's response when he came back at the end of the day from his charter on El Nuevo today. They didn't have any flags flying so I asked him what happened out there. "You didn't catch nada," I asked? "We saw a lotta Marlin, Ryan, pero no hungry." This has been the case lately with all the squid in the water, Marlin are filling up on the squid candy and have no interest in the Mackeral. Yesterday, the boys were able to get a few, but no luck on Nuevo today. We had the Schwartz family down from New Jersey today. Arlene and Howard had never been to Cabo and really wanted to have a great day on the water. Fortunately, they have another day of fishing planned for Saturday, so we have another chance to show them what Cabo is all about.

On the Red Beam today we had the Savage crew from Wisconsin. They had been to Cabo before, but never caught any fish. We were determined to change that stat today and Muneca and Marshall did their best. They were able to land a few Bonita and one really nice Dorado. Knock that skunk off your Cabo fishing resume.

Omar and Americo fished with Jim and David Edwards of Universal City, Texas. We forgot to ask them, but we are sure they are TCU Horned Frog Fans! Fishing was ok for this father/son crew as they were able to land a Bonita and a nice Striped Marlin. We'll see these guys again Thursday as they are headed out once again.

On Anzuelo II with Captain Rafa we had the Weber party. Bill and his 3 girls had a great time today battling the ever present Humbolt Squid. We thought a Marlin just might come by and scoop up one of the Squid on the way up, but today wasn't their day for a Marlin. See you in a few weeks Bill.

Finally, on Rum Runnin we had Dave Condon and his crew off of a cruise ship for a half day charter. It seems like the half day cruise ship clients always do really well. Dave was no exception today bringing in 2 Dorado and 1 Striped Marlin.

Water Temps were 72-74 degrees. Marlin were biting live and dead rigged Mackeral. Dorado were hitting soft lures.
