We've been dealing with lots of folks calling and emailing about the "Swine Flu." Everything is fine in Cabo, regardless of what you hear on the news and in the papers. They have confirmed that only a few of the deaths in Mexico City were really "Swine Flu" related. 36,000 people die annually in the US from the seasonal flu. "Swine Flu" like any other flu, is not curable, but it is treatable. Business as usual here with the RedRum crew.
Monday we got to have a little fun as the office staff headed out on the water for a few hours. John flew down from California on Sunday, my sister Jen and her boyfriend Paul are visiting, plus Brooke and I on the boat. We headed out on El Nuevo and headed for the Jaime Bank on the Pacific. Running into some real rough water, and with the girls not feeling so hot, we made a change to the plan and turned towards the smoother waters on the Sea of Cortez. Paul, a rookie to the Cabo offshore game, but a veteran of 6 years in the Alaskan commercial game was first on the rod. We warmed him up with a Skipjack Tuna before getting him on a big Marlin. A nice Striped Marlin in the 190lb range hit a stitch bait on the port side corner and the fight was on. While fighting the one fish, a big Blue swam past, but we were unable to entice her with a live Mackeral. Paul was almost to leader when the Marlin spit the bait and the hook. Guess you will have to come back down Paul. Good times!
Ben Reina is down from Chicago with his wife, but she didn't want to head out fishing. Ben headed out Monday with ReelRum and was rewarded with 3 Yellowfin Tuna and a real nice Marlin. Congrats on that first Billfish Ben. On day 2, while getting strikes and hooking 3 different Dorado and pitching bait to a few Marlin, nothing was brought on board. The boys did however spot a 300-400 lb Blue Marlin chasing the lures behind the boat!
Jack Kay and his crew, new friends from the New England area, had their second day of fishing with RedRum yesterday. While they had a great day on the water and had a bit of action, nothing was brought on board. Good thing they caught fish on day 1!
Scott Stanard and his daughter Ashley, who are good friends from Nebraska were down yesterday and they had a great day on the water. They saw all kinds of sea life, including a big Hammerhead Shark that breached close to the boat. Towards the end of the day, they were able to hook into and catch 2 nice Dorado. As an added bonus for the office crew, they have invited us to dinner tonight. Good luck to Ashley in her next endeavor as she is off to Bulgaria to serve in the Peace Corps.
The Brinkman party on the Red Beam has had a great time in Cabo, fishing however, didn't work out too well. Water was a bit rough today and they were back early, without any flags.
Warm warm water in the Cortez, up to 80 degrees in some spots today, could be bringing the Blue Marlin a little earlier than normal this year. Omar and Alex have each spotted Blues the last few days! Here's to a great Blue Marlin season for Cabo and RedRum Sportfishing.

Farrell's Catch Marlin - April 21st
From John Farrell and friends who fished with us on our 28' Californian "ReelRum" on April 21st :
We had such a great time and I wanted to take a minute to let you guys know how much we appreciated the effort that Cesar and Omar put forth for our charter. I've fished all over the country with various guides and charter companies. These guys were top notch. They're effort and skill was second to none.
My wife and I had a great time and couldn't have asked for a better day of fishing. I'm telling everyone that stands still long enough about my week in Cabo and in particular the fishing trip with RedRum.

Its hard work but someone has got to do it!
Americo and his dad, one of the finest father and son duos in Cabo, took Russ and Kamleesh from Alberta, Canada out on our 28’ Californian “ReelRum”. They decided to head east on the sea of Cortez, about 30 miles offshore and found a Mako shark that wanted to play tug-o-war.
Out on our 32’ Bertram “El Nuevo”, Alex and Ramon opted for middle ground, staying between the sea of Cortez and the Pacific. Bill is an old friend, having fished with us plenty of times in the past and requested Captain Alex for this year’s trip. This decision proved not only fun but smart given the four Tuna they caught. With two more days scheduled to fish those Tuna better watch out!
Gordon and his friends from Ohio say that they’re here in Cabo on a “work trip”. But we all know better. It’s pretty hard to get much done in Cabo besides going fishing, taking in some rest and throwing back some “chelas” (ask for one next time you want a beer in Mexico and you’ll sound really cool). They were hoping for a big fish but at least they won’t be going home empty-handed, a nice Sierra will be accompanying them….well, at least until dinner time.
Getting most of the action of the day was a sweet couple out on one of our partner Panga boats. In just a few hours these two were back with a Dorado, two Tuna, Sierra and even a Squid. Nice work!

14 Tuna, 2 Striped Marlin
Fishing on our 33’ “El Nuevo” today were our friends from Oklahoma Office Systems. The group of six spent their time offshore on the pacific side where water temperature was at 69 degrees and wind was coming in from the SSE at 14mph. Alex and Cesar took Kendall and his group to their secret spot and the group caught four 20 to 25 pound Yellowfin Tuna.
Out for the second day this week Marco, Marco and Mauricio went out on our 32’ “RumRunnin” again but this time with Javier and Mickey. The group arrived early and their enthusiasm paid off with both Marco’s reeling in a Striped Marlin each and Mauricio bringing in a nice-sized Tuna.
The Davis’, whom we met recently at the San Mateo trade show, caught 2 Tuna today with Omar and Americo on our 28’ ReelRum. They hooked the fish roughly 20 miles offshore on the Pacific side of the Baja.
And last but not least, our group of six anglers fishing our 32’ “RedBeam” with Marcial and Mu~neca caught 7 Tuna, spotted quite a few Marlin, dolphins, a whale and even a couple of turtles.

Fire/Power Outage/Tuna/Yes Tuna!
Sorry for the delay on the fish report amigos, yesterday and today (probably the next few days realistically)we have and will be without power. Everyone is safe and sound, but there was an electrical fire at an office/bodega that is rented by the Bucaneer Queen (a local pirate like tourist boat.) Evidently, the majority of the wiring is housed in a closet in or around their office and something malfunctioned. So, no electricity in Marina Cabo Plaza/
That being said, we have had our hands full with the power outage. Had to run back to back to back extension cords to get a lamp in the office this morning and the credit card machine working. Those two things are the least of our worries though. The real problem is the freezers, and the fish in the freezers. Luckily, the last of the client fish was picked up right before the outage, but there are still random filets that people have left and our own personal stash as well.
That being said, could the Tuna pick a worse time to show up? And in huge numbers. I'll get to the reason why a little later, a few of you may have an idea why already.
So let's get back to Monday. Two boats on the calendar, ReelRum and RumRunnin'. Omar and Javier and I were talking in the morning (a captains meeting if you will,) and Javier was mentioning that he had heard of some action out near the 1150 bank on the Sea of Cortez. Couldn't pull the Terrafin Sea Surface temperature because of the electricity problems, but I thought I had seen some warm water heading into the Pacific as well. Omar and Americo had Shelley and Sharon on board, two sisters from Ohio who were feeling adventurous and tried something they had never done before. Way to pull the pin ladies! Sharon was a little nervous before they took off, but after some good natured ribbing, they were ready and excited. Omar stayed true to his plan and headed for the 1150 Bank. There they were lucky enough to see a bunch of Marlin, two breaching whales, and plenty of sea life. They had fun fighting several squid that they released and they brought in a real nice Dorado. Congrats ladies, thanks for giving sportfishing a try! Come back and see us soon.
Javier and Manuel had Mike and Angela from Canada. Mike has fished with us in the past and walked into the office late Sunday afternoon. We got them booked up for Monday as that was all we had left for the week. I told Mike that the fishing offshore was a bit slow, nonetheless he was ready for whatever. We often say, come with a good attitude and you will come back at the end of the day happy. This epitomizes Mike. Javier got another call from a friend on the radio and he told him to change course from the 1150 Bank and head over towards San Jaime. The warm water had continued it's path and San Jaime bank had nice blue, 72 degree water. As they approached the bank and started to see signs of life, a tailing Marlin on the surface caught their eye. Manuel pitched the bait and set the hook and the fight was on. Mike was looking to beat his Marlin personal best of 101 inches. This one taped out at 100, just shy. Shortly thereafter, they hit the jackpot. They found porpoise and they were holding Tuna. Mike and Angela reeled in their limit of 6 and headed back for lunch and a beer. First nice school of Yellowfin of 2009!

Yesterday's large Yellowfin school was talk of the town this morning, with each Captain almost giddy about heading out and finding the school again. Marshall on the Red Beam had a cruise ship client that was scheduled to arrive at 9:30am and he was worried the other boys would catch all the fish before he got there. It was almost amusing watching him stress out.
Apparently the cruise ship was late, because George and Rene went over to wait for the clients and were still waiting at 10:15am. Well the Adams crew did end up getting out on the water, but they didn't have time to get out past San Jaime where the Yellowfin were. Marshall opted instead to head towards Punta Ballena and Chileno Bay. There they found an assortment of inshore fish and, of course, Squid. Water was 73-74 but a bit on the greenish side.
Next we had a huge crew of 9 who had reserved El Nuevo and RumRunnin for the day. We had the Hansen crew made up of Jen, Matt, Ty and Camden. The Luna's (moon in Spanish,) Jay and Tara, the Painton's Laurie, and trip co-ordinator Terry, and finally Ken Burnham. Javier on RumRunnin led the way and Alex followed with El Nuevo as they headed back out to the San Jaime region looking for that school of Yellowfin and that nice blue water. Well, they certainly found them. After the boats were back and the totals were tallied, 27 Yellowfin (of which many were released) and 2 Dorado were caught. Special congratulations to Matt Hansen who was super stoked on his first ever Dorado!
Now, here is where you savvy folks might understand the dilemma we were in when folks came back with heaps of fish. We had no way to vacuum seal the fish, and no way to freeze. As you know and the clients understood, this was completely out of our control. We devised a plan though, and made sure all the fish was taken care of. Thanks to all the clients today and in the coming days who understand that this is out of our control.
Next to return was Omar and Cesar on ReelRum. They had John and Zachy Farrell, newlyweds from Atlanta. They were honeymooning (?) and couldn't be happier when they arrived in the morning, high on love! Once again, great attitude, phenominal day on the water. Omar headed to San Jaime as well, but after catching a few Yellowfin, John wanted to try for something a little bigger. We are very happy to announce that RedRum Sportfishing was the cause of the first fight of their new marriage. Omar hooked 3 Marlin for the lovers to battle, and they were able to bring in all 3 for Catch and Release. "Fight Marlin, not each other!" -RedRum Sportfishing advice on Love and Life.
Finally, we had Bill and Gayl Kirkpatrick along with their friends Bill and Kelli Boswell from Atlanta as well. Bill had met John at a fishing show in California recently and decided to get hooked up while they were down here. Rafael was their Captain today on Anzuelo II and he had a phenominal day on the water. He too, headed for San Jaime with a livewell full of Caballito's. The Kirkpatrick's and Boswell's came in after to let me know what a great day they had had. And Gayl even reeled in her first (and second and third and fourth) Tuna ever. When it was said and done they had caught (and released,most) nearly 25 Yellowfin and also caught 4 Dorado. One of the Dorado was a big bull, measuring out 52 inches. Bill decided a fiberglass reproduction would of the fish would look real good hanging in the house back home.
Fabulous two days on the water for RedRum.

Monster Grouper
Today we had great weather in Cabo, high was in the 70's, light breeze and calm seas. Water temps on the Sea of Cortez were in the mid-70's. Two boats headed out today, ReelRum and RumRunnin.
Javier and Marshall headed out on Rum Runnin with John Bailey. John had set up a share before he came to Cabo but his partner never showed. Normally, that would mean more fish for John. The problem was, the Marlin just weren't biting. While the inshore bite is strong, the offshore bite as you know if you have been keeping up, has been slow. Javier said he saw more than a dozen Marlin. Just couldn't get any to get hungry at the right time.
On ReelRum we had Mike Westburg, Amanda and Deborah Rieken. Opting to try their luck inshore, Americo and Cesar headed towards Santa Maria bay on the Sea of Cortez. They started to meter some fish and decided to give it a shot. They certainly picked the right spot with 7 nice Yellowfin slamming their lures and bait over the next 2 hours or so. After a lull in the action, they felt a whopper of a fish take the bait and the battle was on. When it was said and done, a 70-80lb Grouper was on the boat. Check out the photos below.
