Mostly Cortez fishing today

The Franklin group from Texas went out on two of our boats today, the 33’ El Nuevo and 32’ RumRunnin. On Nuevo they caught a twenty five to thirty pound Dorado at 1150 banks of the sea of Cortez and on RumRunnin they caught an eighty pound Tuna in the same spot.

The Thompson group from Los Angeles, San Fancisco, CA and Austin, Texas went out on our 32’ RedBeam with Captain Marcial and Mate Fabian. They hit 95 banks on the Cortez side and hooked up to an easy Dorado around noon weighing about forty pounds. Water temperature was at eighty seven degrees.

The Joubran group from Texas went out on one of our partner boats with Captain Ulises and caught 8 Tuna around fifteen pounds each. The group fished about ten miles from Golden Gate where water temperature was eighty degrees.

Love and Fish

Some people look for their future husband or wife at the grocery store, others in bars like “El Squid Roe” while other’s like Monika and Jeff from San Diego go fishing. Almost fifteen years ago this couple came down to Cabo to fish with friends and they’ve been inseparable since. They have fond memories of Cabo not only because of their romance but because of the great fishing and today was no different. They headed out to Golden Gate on our 28’ ReelRum with captain Americo and mate Juan. Roughly ten miles from shore they hooked up to and caught 4 twenty pound Tuna and 4 twenty five to thirty pound Dorado. After their catch they came back in to let me know how their day went and you could tell from their faces that they had had a great time. When I asked how they were treated by their crew Jeff said: “I’ve been on boats where the crew was just hanging out but these guys were constantly working. They saw stuff that we couldn’t even see”.

Daniel, Jason, Buddy, Kim, Natasha and Kris went out for the second time this week, this time on our 32’ RumRunnin with Captain Javier and Mate Manuel. Ben caught a big Tuna and tried to hook up to a Marlin but they wouldn’t bite. Jason caught onto a eight foot sailfish weighing about eighty pounds which will soon be mounted in his game room next to the Bass he catches on his lakes; tough life.

Mark, Travis, Darin, Melissa, Branwyn and Misty from Texas made it into the office a bit late this morning claiming time change confusion but once they were out on the open water the true reason for sleeping in came out. Fortunately they were in good company with Captain Alex and Mate Ramon on our 33’ El Nuevo. Before coming in this group did a great job at catching a hundred and twenty pound Tuna using a lure on the sea of Cortez about 5 miles from shore. It was a nice forty minute struggle that brought the entire group back to life and we will be seeing them for more action again on Monday.

Fishing after Jimena

Hola Anglers. We got a visit from hurricane Jimena on tuesday and the Marina was closed for two days so we had to go without fishing but we were back at it today. Thankfully Jimena did not reach the strength expected of it on our shore and the Marina and town are doing well and as busy as ever.

Daniel, Jason, Buddy, Kim, Natasha and Kris from Texas went out for their first day of fishing for the week on our 33’ El Nuevo with Captain Alex and Mate Ramon. The water was calm after Jimena has passed and they headed east to Golden Gate where water temperature was at 82 degrees. There they used lures to catch a twenty pound Dorado and four fifteen to twenty pound Tuna, only six miles from shore.

Sunday Fishing

We had 4 boats out today and all went well. Water is still in the mid-80's and fish are still very active. First group was Lori and John Dean and their friends, Diane and William Andries. Lori, John, Diane and William are the latest to partake in our Play and Stay packages. They loved the accomodations at Portofino, but were ready to get on the water. Captain Alex headed towards the Golden Gate bank on the Pacific in search of some action and it didn't take long. They finished the day with 3 boated Dorado, and few Billfish strikes, but couldn't get a Billfish hook-up.

Mark and Dorothy Willingham are down from Houston, Texas and are no strangers to Hurricane warnings. They re-counted their tales of the past few years and the storms they have been through. Luckily, they are leaving town on Monday and won't have to wait out another storm. That being said, the Willingham's had a hell of a day on the water. 11 Dorado, and 1 Yellowfin Tuna when all was said and done.

The Father/Son crew. John Rocky, John Rocky Jr., and Justin Rocky are down from California fishing on a credit from last year, when their trip was cancelled due to a Hurricane. As much as we like the Rocky's, this is starting to look like a pattern here. Everytime they come down or plan on coming down a Hurricane comes with them. They guys had a great first day on the water, they had tons of Dorado strikes and landed 3 fish, they also hooked into and landed a nice Striped Marlin. Good stuff guys, see you tomorrow.

Finally, we had another Father/Son combo with Brad and Alex Dodge. Brad and Alex fished aboard ReelRum with Omar and Juan. All the guys did a great job with Omar and Juan putting the guys on the fish and Brad and Alex bringing them in. They finished the day with 4 Dorado and a Striped Marlin catch and release.

Still watching the storm. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Hurricane Jimena

Let's all hope history repeats itself and this Miss Hurricane Jimena steers clear of us down in the Baja and heads out to the Pacific side missing the Los Cabos area. The port is currently still open in Los Cabos and its business as ususal. There are some storm clouds brewing in the sky but other than that it was a great day on the water for all RedRum boats... fish report to come soon. It's been a busy Sunday folks, bear with us!

Here is the latest from the report we follow on www.wunderground.com/tropical

Jimena is moving toward the west-northwest near 8 mph...13 km/hr...and a gradual turn toward the northwest and then north-northwest isexpected during the next 48 hours.

Satellite images indicate that the maximum sustained winds are now near 140 mph...220 km/hr...with higher gusts. Jimena is a category four hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Some fluctuations in strength are likely over the next day or two.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles...35 km...from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles...110 km.

Saturday's Switch-up

Saturday morning was interesting to say the least, in more ways than one. First we had a mix up on Rum Runnin'. Today was day two for Scott and Lori Golden and their crew which totaled about 12 of their friends. Somewhere from here to the dock, we had a mix-up and they got on Rum Runnin. Only problem was, the Golden Group was booked on Anzuelo II for day 2.

Needless to say, I didn't figure this out until too late. I started to walk down the docks with Chad Taylor and his wife who had reserved Rum Runnin for the day and they were as shocked as I was to see another 4 clients on the boat they reserved. My bad.

After some apologies to both groups, we got everyone on their way. About 15 minutes later, as the boats are probably rounding the Arch and heading up the Pacific you can hear the sounds of incoming thunder storm. Luckily the boats were never in danger, but all the clients and everyone on the Marina had quite the show as lighting crashed off the coast towards the Sea of Cortez. As quick as it came, it was gone, but we did get our first 10 minutes of rain all year, and that was good.

As it turned out, both the groups from the switch-up did great. The Golden group had a double header on Marlin and it worked out perfect because of the twin fighting chairs on Anzuelo II. Caught and released both of them and came back to tell me how great of a day it was. Chad Taylor and his wife, kept the streak going on Rum Runnin and came back with 6 nice Dorado's.

The next group was John Black and his buddies from Texas, who were referrals from my good buddy Thomas Lacy. John and his buddies may have set the record for strikes on a RedRum boat on one day. John and the guys came back and said they had a good day, 3 Dorado. The true story was when Captain Marshall came back. He was really animated when telling me about his day. "Ryan, we must have had 35 strikes. We were sharpening hooks, changing the length on the hooksets, changing trolling speed. We could not get the hooks to set." I was chuckling a little bit, and certainly not at John Black and his crew's success or lack their of, but at Captain Marshall. I assured him that even while he gets to fish one of the most amazing areas of the world every day, from time to time, the ocean is going to win.

Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Stuck on Fish

Hola fellow angler enthusiasts, hope everyone is enjoying their summer and planning their next adventure to Cabo. We're having a great week fishing and the temperature even seems to be stabilizing a bit though still quite warm. before we report on todays catch we wanted to catch you up on Tuesdays great fun.

Tuesday August 25th, 2009

Rich and JR went out on our 32’ RumRunnin with Captain Javier and Mate Manuel. They fished Golden Gate and caught 12 Tuna and 8 Dorado.

Steve and his girlfriend Liza, good friends of Ryan Donovan’s are in town with family staying at the Portofino condos that we offer in our Play and Stay packages. They fished on our 28’ ReelRum at Golden Gate and caught 9 Dorado which they have been enjoying for lunch and dinners at our favorite restaurant in town, Misiones de Kino.

Our great friend Brian and his wife Viven went out on our 33’ El Nuevo with Captain Alex and Mate Ramon. They were the first boat back after plenty of action out on the Pacific. The first fish they caught was a inshore fish we call Bonita which literally translates as “pretty” though I’m not sure that I would agree with the translation. After that warm up they got going really quick and caught 9 Dorado by 9am at one point having a triple hook-up. As if that weren’t enough, they caught and released 3 Sailfish and caught a Wahoo as well. Nice job Brian and Viven!!!

Friday August 28th, 2009

John Donovan and Scott Golden met four years ago at a football game when John had just taken over RedRum Sportfishing in Cabo San Lucas. They immidietely bonded over their passion to fish and have been working together ever since. John hooking him and his friend at Deep Blue marine up with great fishing trips and Scott in turn getting us top quality fishing accessories. Scott and his group of ten other anglers went out on three of our boats today, our 28’ ReelRum, our 32’ RumRunnin and our 33’ El Nuevo. ReelRum was the first boat back with 7 twenty to twenty five pound Dorado’s that they caught by Golden Gate using lures. They released one back into the 83 degree ocean. The group that went out on RumRunnin caught 8 Dorado and released 2, also around twenty five pounds each. Laurie Golden caught and released a hundred and forty pound Sailfish on our 33’ El Nuevo and the rest of the group pitched in with a few more Dorado which they generously shared with the crew. We’ll see everyone back tomorrow for round #2. Check out Deep Blue Marine at http://www.deepbluemarine.com/.

John Robertson and friends from New Orleans, LA are in Cabo fishing for the first time and went out on our 32’ RedBeam with Captain Marcial and Mate Fabian. They fished Golden Gate and caught 12 twenty five pound Dorado.

Cindy and David from San Antonio, Texas went out on one of our partner boats and caught 15 Dorado, most of which they released and the rest they shared with their crew. They also fought a Marlin but it ended up getting away this time.

Darton, Blake, Jeremy, Alisa and Chris from Tulsa, Oklahoma went out on another one of our great partner boats and caught 2 Dorado using lures on the Pacific side.
