We're having a great week fishing and the temperature even seems to be stabilizing a bit though still quite warm. before we report on todays catch we wanted to catch you up on Tuesdays great fun.
Tuesday August 25th, 2009
Rich and JR went out on our 32’ RumRunnin with Captain Javier and Mate Manuel. They fished Golden Gate and caught 12 Tuna and 8 Dorado.
Steve and his girlfriend Liza, good friends of Ryan Donovan’s are in town with family staying at the Portofino condos that we offer in our Play and Stay packages. They fished on our 28’ ReelRum at Golden Gate and caught 9 Dorado which they have been enjoying for lunch and dinners at our favorite restaurant in town, Misiones de Kino.
Our great friend Brian and his wife Viven went out on our 33’ El Nuevo with Captain Alex and Mate Ramon. They were the first boat back after plenty of action out on the Pacific. The first fish they caught was a inshore fish we call Bonita which literally translates as “pretty” though I’m not sure that I would agree with the translation. After that warm up they got going really quick and caught 9 Dorado by 9am at one point having a triple hook-up. As if that weren’t enough, they caught and released 3 Sailfish and caught a Wahoo as well. Nice job Brian and Viven!!!

John Donovan and Scott Golden met four years ago at a football game when John had just taken over RedRum Sportfishing in Cabo San Lucas. They immidietely bonded over their passion to fish and have been working together ever since. John hooking him and his friend at Deep Blue marine up with great fishing trips and Scott in turn getting us top quality fishing accessories. Scott and his group of ten other anglers went out on three of our boats today, our 28’ ReelRum, our 32’ RumRunnin and our 33’ El Nuevo. ReelRum was the first boat back with 7 twenty to twenty five pound Dorado’s that they caught by Golden Gate using lures. They released one back into the 83 degree ocean. The group that went out on RumRunnin caught 8 Dorado and released 2, also around twenty five pounds each. Laurie Golden caught and released a hundred and forty pound Sailfish on our 33’ El Nuevo and the rest of the group pitched in with a few more Dorado which they generously shared with the crew. John Robertson and friends from New Orleans, LA are in Cabo fishing for the first time and went out on our 32’ RedBeam with Captain Marcial and Mate Fabian. They fished Golden Gate and caught 12 twenty five pound Dorado.
Cindy and David from San Antonio, Texas went out on one of our partner boats and caught 15 Dorado, most of which they released and the rest they shared with their crew. They also fought a Marlin but it ended up getting away this time.
Darton, Blake, Jeremy, Alisa and Chris from Tulsa, Oklahoma went out on another one of our great partner boats and caught 2 Dorado using lures on the Pacific side.

Wishing for Tuna in Cali as in Baja
David McAninch and friends from Santa Barbara, California went out on our 32’ RumRunnin with Captain Javier and Mate Manuel. They headed to the Pacific side and caught 3 Dorado and 3 Tuna. David’s been fishing in Cabo before but it was a first for the rest of the guys and they’re looking forward to dinner time.
Ron went out on our 28’ ReelRum with Captain Omar and Mate Americo. They also headed to the pacific side and thought they found a lot of fish they were stubborn to bite. Though it was quiet the boys found a Dorado for Ron to fight.
Mario and friends, from Seattle, San Diego and Dallas went out on our 33’ El Nuevo with Captain Alex and Mate Ramon. Nate got the big catch of the day, fighting an 80 pound Sailfish which was released. They also caught 7 Dorado, the largest weighing thirty pounds, releasing three of them. All this just three miles offshore in the Golden Gate area.
Ti and wife Melanie from Pensacola, Florida went out on our 32’ RedBeam with Captain Marcial and Mate Fabian. They found their catch five miles offshore straight out from the Marina. Both Ti and Melanie got the chance to reel in and release a Marlin, the first weighing about 110 pounds and the second close to 140 pounds. They also caught 4 Dorado which they’ll be enjoying for lunch and dinner throughout the week.
John Donovan is playing the famous card once again and being the great guy that he is he's using his fame for a good cause tonight. Every year the San Diego chapter of the Make A Wish Foundation holds a Tuna tournament they call the "Tuna Challenge". John will be speaking to the anglers participating in the tournament to give them tips on how to catch a Tuna the RedRum/Cabo San Lucas way. Buena Suerte!!!

Harary Fishing
I just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful 2 days of fishing last week. Im lucky if I get to go out deep sea even once a year- so to come home with a cooler full of fish and great memories was definitely worth the trip from NYC. As I mentioned, this was our 4th trip down to Cabo in order to fish and I am sorry that we waited so long to give you guys a shot. Omar and Amerigo on the Reel Rum were absolutely fantastic. They listened to all of our requests regarding the types of fish that we wanted to catch, and they made it happen (sans Marlin- although we saw some, just couldn’t hook them). I wrote the following emails out to my family while I was on the boat during my days fishing- enjoy…..
Tuesday August 18th
Beautiful 100 degrees and sunny...
We went out this AM on the ReelRum to the Pacific side of Cabo to an area called the Golden Gate. At 8:30 am we hooked up with and landed a 65# sailfish. Went until 10:30 before we got a Mahi. It wad pretty small so we released it. At 12:30 all hell broke loose. Frigate birds circling low overhead and diving. There were tons of dolphins and seals swimming in the water a long side our boat. We were sure we were gonna get tuna there. Next thing we know is one of the rods gets a hit and starts losing line fast. Soon we get a closer look at this monster fish. None other than your good old warm blooded friend mr dolphin (no, not the fish). Very sad to say the least. The mate worked for 40 min in order to free it. It is very unusual to hook a porpoise, and to my surprise it took a Marlin plug that we were trolling- not even live bait. In all the mayhem I managed to hook up with and release a 2nd sailfish weighing in slightly over 100#. Leah ended up catching 1 more 20lb mahi. After that we had a few more marlin sightings, but couldn't get them to bite. Total tally for the day 2 sailfish released, 1 mahi released, 1 mahi kept for dinner. The elusive marlin continues to school me- at least until tomorrow
Wednesday August 19th
Time to fire up the grill....
. I am currently writing this on the boat racing back to the dock. What a fantastic adventure!
We decided to try our luck in a completely different part of the fishing grounds. We took a 30 mile trip offshore in search of some pelagics (tuna, mahi, marlin). After the 1.5 hour ride up to the grounds, the scene was dead. No marine life or bird life like we had experienced yesterday. There was 1 other boat on the horizon. After 3.5 grueling hours of waiting and melting in the hellish rays of the sun our luck took a turn for the better. We saw marine life in all directions as far as the eye can see. They were dolphins playing and putting on a show for us. I was hoping that the pods of dolphins that we were trolling with would have a pack of hungry tuna traveling with them. At 12pm we got our first bite. It was a double header with leah fighting a 20lb class tuna in the chair and I was fighting a slightly larger fish on standup gear. Amerigo our mate turns to me and in a heavily accented english says "its tuna time!!". Now I don't care if you are an avid fisherman or a novice, but those words will wake any angler out of a slumber. Suddenly the water was on fire again. 100# tuna were launching out of the water like missiles chasing after bait fleeing for their lives. Amerigo pitched a live sardine out to the mayhem and we were on with a 35 pounder. I struggled to get this fish to the boat, and when I finally did, we were on with another fish. Leah was in the seat for this one which turned out to be a beautiful 35lb. Bull Mahi. We trolled for a few minutes and saw some fish busting bait on the surface so Amerigo pitched another sardine. There was an immediate hookup with a locomotive that headed for the depths. It took 20 min to get her in, but when I did, I was face to face with the 50lber that is pictured here. I would have been scared to see what her big poppa would have fought like. Total tally for the day 5 tuna and 1 Dorado (mahi). The still elusive marlin is out there somewhere, and will continue to haunt my dreams.

Muzyka Play and Stay
Joe and Irene Muzyka, Alan Smith, Bob Turner and Dave Dunlevy from New Jersey booked a Play and Stay package with us and fished on our 32' RumRunnin on August 17th, 19th and 21st. They had lots of fun out on the water with Captain Javier and Mate Manuel and brought back lots of Dorado, Tuna and fought a few Marlin and Sails which they released.

Kathy and I just wanted to thank both you and Ryan for setting us up so well for our stay in Cabo! The condo was perfect for our arrival. We really had a great time, especially fishing!
All your recommendations for dinners and activities were great, they were all top notch places and people. You guys are both truly connected and part of the community. Not to mention a great reputation fishing as well.
You guys made our stay both memorable and enjoyable!! See you guys in November.....
We had some of our catch for dinner the other night with family and friends and it was all outstanding!! Nice job packaging up our fish for us. It was still completely frozen solid....9 hours later!!

Troy Salazar's trip aboard RumRunnin on August 16th, 2009
I would like to first start off by saying a BIG thanks to Ryan and Brooke of RedRum Sportfishing for an EXCELLENT time aboard one of their boats. They set us up on one of their 32 ft Sport fishers "RUM RUNNIN " a 6 pack boat that included Me my daughter and 4 of my friends that were vacationing with us.
The boat is in immaculate condition with top of the line equipment Shimano / Penn International on board just in case you didn't happen to bring your own. These airlines are just getting out of hand with the cost anymore so it is somewhat of a pain in the ass to transport! Anyway arrived at the boat around 5:45 waiting for the office to open to see what we needed to pick up at the store located in the landing . To my surprise I was greeted by RYAN the owner he payed personal attention to us and made sure the boat was packed with ICE, Lunches, Water for the trip as well as arranging mexican licenses for the day . The service was second to none so a few handshakes and an introduction to the crew and we are off . RedRum has a regular bait supplier in the harbor so they are GUARENTEED to have bait available even when it becomes scarce for MOST! That was good to hear so we picked up a dozen pieces and plotted a course the plan was to head to the Banks to see what was cracking but if anything looked FISHY along the way. So after about an hour + trek up the coast we get to some promising looking water lots of life porpoise , turtles , and bait fish balling on the surface the Captain had had some luck the day before. The Temp is high and the Tuna count seems to be coming up just the day before we left saw a guy in the harbor with a 200+ Yellowfin!
So we get the trollers out and start marching into the BLUE with all eyes on the water . It is not long I see a 100 + lb class striped marlin fining on the surface he had a slight case of the LOCK JAW as they sometimes do but it didn't discourage us just got the adrenaline going . It wasn't long before we spot the second one fining and seems he wants to GO ! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ FISH ON the deckhand ( Martine) hands off the rod to me and I IMMEDIATELY pass it off to my daughter ( 8 ) as the fish makes it's first jump . I can honestly say it was one of my proudest moments the look on her face ...gritting her teeth ready to take this fish to task ( FEARLESS) anyway she fought it for about 15 minutes until she couldn't take it anymore and DAD pitched in . The Guys on the boat laughed when I said those chairs are for pussies and strapped on the belt to handle this shit in true WEST COAST fashion . After about 20 minutes got the fish to the boat guessed the weight at around 100 to 110. A beautiful and respectable fish none the less . Turns out we repeated that process 2 more times before the day was over with 3 landed the BIG one for us going 140 lbs. ALL RELEASED after a few quick photos what a magnificent animal!
After a few MARLIN pulled on it was time to downsize the gear and see if we couldn't catch some dinner. Smaller feathers deployed we didn't make it 10 minutes before the first knockdown a small DORADO probably 8 to 10 lb. class Ended up at the end of the day keeping 9 for the boat of 6 but pulled on MANY more than that ! All the smaller or shall I say smallest models were released . My buddy Mike that went with us farmed 3 nice fish during the course of the day all I could do was shake my head but it was his first time fishing in the ocean so how mad can you get. The closing of the day was getting the trollers in and start steaming back to the the harbor when all of a sudden the CAPTAIN throttles up and make a quick turn I knew it was going to be something GOOD .....and it was . A Pair of Male and Female DORADO swimming on the surface and they are the BIGGER MODELS ! Bait goes in and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ the female wants to GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I burry the hook and She comes flying out of the water and starts ripping line ........YEAH ! After about 10 minutes in the water and several jumps later the male decides to take a look at the action so I kept her in the water to see if we couldn't get him to take bait .........HE was smarter and had a case of the lockjaw. Until Next time for him estimated the weight of the female to be between 35 and 40 lbs. That I am not sure of but was a VERY nice fish to end the day with . Hats off the the REdRum Crew aboard Rum Runnin for and awesome time aboard your boat I would recommend you to ANYONE we all had a blast www.redrumcabo.com .......Made memories that will last a lifetime and you gained a CUSTOMER for LIFE !!!!!!!
