Catching....Up

Hola Hola

As many of you know, we have been a little short staffed and one of the areas that takes a hit is the fishing report. We are currently interviewing for the Office Manager position, and while finding someone like Luis or Diana will not be easy, we have met a bunch of great candidates already and I am confident we will find someone to y'alls liking as well as ours.

I know Brooke did a quick report yesterday, but I will try to catch you up on the days I missed before yesterday. I won't go into detail about every single charter, but rather try to give you an idea of what's been happening.

As you may have read, we had great Marlin and Dorado fishing from the 1st of the New Year through the middle of last week, and then things slowed down. We had some winds that kicked up the water on the Pacific, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and it made for some tough fishing. We tried to send boats to the Cortez to stay out of the choppy water, but the fishing wasn't all that great over there. It's always a bummer when folks come back without any flags flying, but that's part of the game. We had over 10 charters on Friday and Saturday alone and we did have 2 boats get skunked.

Bruce Billings and his crew were the lucky anglers on the 15th. Bringing in 5 Dorado while fishing with Javier, these guys caught more than any other boat that day. They also fished the 16th and were only able to get 2 Dorado. Their final day of fishing the 17th, they really wanted to focus on getting that Marlin, but it wasn't in the cards. The guys were here early every day, and they fished hard, but couldn't get that Billfish.

Cody and Tonya Lavelett, along with their pal Mike Kiser were the winners on the 16th with 5 Dorado fishing with Javier on Rum Runnin. They decided on day 2 that they wanted to give a go at some Tuna fishing. Javier had heard a few reports on the radio and they gave it a shot on the 17th. Well, as it sometimes goes with the Tuna, they had to search a bit, and they had to travel close to 30 miles offshore, but they were the first to find them and landed 9 when it was said and done.

Not everyone had the same success as the Billings crew or the Lavelett's and that is always hard for our clients to comprehend. Why do two boats fishing the same area, with the same bait and tackle have such different success rates? That's fishing guys. Cabo is always billed as the Sportfishing Capital of the World, and 95% of the time we are catching fish like crazy, but great days wouldn't be special if there weren't a few tough days. That being said, it always sucks for those folks that get unlucky out there.

The average over the weekend was one or two fish per boat, some got lucky and found the Tuna and were able to really get into them. A few boats even found nice schools of Dorado and got 3 or 4 fish.

The last two groups that did very well were the Blair's from Alvarado, Texas and Chistopher Walters group from Cape May, New Jersey.

The Blairs are friends of friends, and I told them in the morning, while I couldn't get them on a Billfish more than likely, we could most likely find some Tuna and have some fun. Check and Check. 12 Tuna for the day and Mrs. Blair came back into the office to tell me it was her best fishing experience of her life. Good stuff guys, glad it worked out well.

Christopher Walters was supposed to fish with two buddies on TantRum, but two more friends showed up rather unexpectedly, meaning they wouldn't all fit on the boat. Luckily, I was able to move them over to the RedBeam where they fished with Raymond and Fausto. I could write about their day, but Christopher sent me a nice email and he said it well enough. Below is Chris' email....

RedRum THANKS You guys are the BEST. I am so pleased with your service. I reserved and at the last moment had 2 other guests show up and you were able to upgrade me to a larger boat in less than 30 minutes. Thanks. And buy the way WE CAUGHT FISH 1 Marlin and 6 Tuna WOW Everything was 1st class. The father and son team of captain and mate were great maybe the best. I will be back. This trip I will remember for ever. Hope to see your dad at the atlantic city boat show soon.

Thanks for taking the time to read the report, and hopefully we can stay on top of it better for you. If you are looking to get out of the cold and enjoy a nice weekend on the water, we still have boats available for the last weekend of the month.
