Bye to 2009 fishies and hello 2010 big ones

Eric couldn’t wake his five friends up after their long night but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to fish. Omar took him out on our 33’ El Nuevo and they caught 4 Dorado between twenty and twenty five pounds.

Scott and Kristin from Utah went out on our 32’ RedBeam with Captain Cesar. They caught and released a Striped Marlin and caught 4 Dorado.

Jake, Zach and Michael arrived this morning on the Radiance of the Seas and spent their morning fishing with Captain Javier on our 32’ RumRunnin. They fished Los Arcos about a mile from shore and caught 4 Dorado weighing up to twenty pounds.

Lukas and mom Elke decided to fish one more time before they head back to Austria. They fished 6 days last week with Javier and today fished on our 28’ Tantrum with Ramon. They fished Los Arcos about five miles from shore and caught and released a hundred and thirty pound Striped Marlin and 2 twenty pound Dorado. Not a bad way to end the year.

Near the End, Still Lots of Fish!

Another sunny day here in Cabo San Lucas, not a cloud in the sky from my post here at the office.

Just a side note, the TCU Horned Frogs football team have arrived in Phoenix and are ready to dominate on January 4th at the Fiesta Bowl. If you don't know what to wear on Monday, we suggest wearing purple in support of your TCU friends at RedRum Sportfishing. Go Frogs!

Happy clients with lots of fish getting ready to ring in the New Year down in Cabo had another great day on the water.

The Haut and Kessler party from Livingston & Gladstone, New Jersey were on board El Nuevo today. The first thought was to go to Jaime Bank to see what was out there. Nothing. Omar and Americo decided to head out to Golden where a solid Dorado bite has been. Sure enough, 3 Dorado later they were good to go!

Two buddies, Jim and Mike from the Phoenix area headed out with Chivo and Jesus on RumRunnin. They went past Golden Gate to an area called Gaspareno (pronounced: Gas-par-ain-yo) where they got into some Dorado on some feathers. They reeled in a total of 6 Dorado and one 20lb. Wahoo. They were generous and gave half the crew their catch!

Mike Tucci was out on the water again this time aboard Tantrum. With Captain Ramon, he was able to reel in 1 catch and release Striped Marlin and 1 Dorado at Los Arcos.

Aboard RedBeam was the Robinson family. A nice couple with their two twin girls from Burbank, California. They reeled in 8 Dorado and lost 4 in the fight. The action was intense out there as they said they had about 7-8 other hits on the line out at Migrino. Their two twin daughters did a great job on the rod! And, I'll have you know they are two quite famous little girls. For all you Dexter fans out there on Showtime, Christina is the daughter of Dexter on the show! Courtney has quite an acting resume as well. Thanks for fishing with us!

Jim & Zac Wittman along with George Liss from Michigan and New Hampshire headed out on our partner boat Anzuelo II today. They were happy with their catch of 5 Dorado which filled up their cooler they'll be taking back home with them. They almost had 8, with the 3 they lost in the fight. Asi es fishing amigos!

Hope everyone is getting excited for the New Year!

Thanks for reading on your holiday.

Sunny Skies, Lots O' Fish

Well after a rain soaked yesterday, all is back to normal in sunny Cabo San Lucas.

The Allen Crew headed out for more again today with Chivo and Jesus aboard RumRunnin. They couldn't say enough great things about the crew and what a fun time they had with those two. They reeled in 3 Dorado of around 30 lbs each and saw lots of Marlin in the area but couldn't get one to bite. They were happy with their Dorado catch and headed over to Mango Cantina for some fish tacos after their day on the water!

The John Duo, John Russell and John Gallops from out east headed out on Tantrum. They reeled in 2 nice sized Dorado and 1 Striped Marlin about 110 pounds.

The Meyer party, getting out of the cold snowy weather in Nebraska (which is where I'm from!) was glad to be in Cabo as their friends and relatives scooped 12 inches of snow off their drives in Omaha. Jessica, Nancy, Bill, Steve, J.R., and Erica all had a great time on the RedBeam. They were ecstatic to bring in their 4 Dorado, which they'll be feasting on at Misiones de Kino this evening for dinner. Oh, and they almost had a Striper to the boat but it got away and snapped the line.

The Schwartz and Reynolds from New Jersey are also glad to be out of the cold I'm sure. They joined Capt. Omar and Mate Americo who are the temporary crew on El Nuevo while Alex and Manuel are enjoying their holiday. Heading out to Los Arcos and Margarita they saw a lot of whales and reeled in 6 Dorado!

Our partner boat Grey Light also headed out for a quick half day trip. It turned out great for Brent, Rick, William and Brook on board from California. They headed all the way out to the Lighthouse reeling in 3 Dorado, losing 4 in the fight, and one 120-130 pound striper which they released. Not bad for a 5 hour day.

Hope you are all staying warm and gearing up for a great 2010!!

Rain Rain Go AWAY!

Well what started as a slightly overcast morning turned into a whole day of rain. You can bet that the mall, bars and massage places are packed while the beaches are vacant. Can you believe it? After a bright sunny day yesterday to this. But this didn't affect the crews of RedRum at all on the water today.

El Nuevo headed out with Matt Rudolph and Adrian Tonge coming from Neenah, Wisconsin and Alanta, Georgia respectively. Omar took El Nuevo out today as the ususal Capt. Alex is enjoying his holiday with family. They nailed it by reeling in 8 nice Dorado. Well done guys!

All aboard Tantrum was Dennis Sundberg, Justin Pearson, Mike Pearson and Eric Mooberry. Hailing from Huntington Beach & Chino, California to Castle Rock, Colorado. They had a fun day on the water with plenty of fish to cook up for dinner. Captain Ramon said the temperature of the water is about 79 degrees and the rain didn't affect the catch. Although it was a bit chilly with the rain out at Golden Gate these guys reeled in 6 Dorado about 25 lbs. each on some small lures.

Ulysses the wonderful captain of Grey Light, the partner boat we use frequently, headed out today with Mike Tucci on board. Flying solo from Rye, New York, Mike had his work cut out for him reeling in 6 Dorado and 1 catch and release Striped Marlin all on his own! He'll be back on the water on Wednesday for more action.

The Allens, John, Dan, Bob, Scott and Kent from Florida headed out with Javier on RumRummin. They fished about 5 miles from shore at Margarita reeling in 4 Dorado and 2 catch and release Striped Marlin on dead bait. Their biggest Dorado weighing around 25-27 lbs.

Chris Mason and Alexis Ross from Dallas enjoyed a fun day on the RedBeam. Captain Cesar got them on a variety of fish with 2 Dorado and 2 Tuna. Not bad for a rainy day!

And last but not least is Pescado III. All aboard was Joe Hines, Sarah Hines, Tyler Hendrickson, Taylor Hines, Janet Hines and Max Hendrickson joining us from Minnesota and Colorado. They reeled in 5 Dorado and 1 catch and release Striped Marlin.

Well done crews, hoping for sunny skies tomorrow!
Brooke

BTW: It's been raining consistently since 11 am here in Cabo and I'm writing this at 3:30, no stop of rain yet. Cabo is going to be greeen!

Monday...

Darrell Breeze and his boys are down from Montana for the holidays and joined us for a day aboard the RedBeam. Levi, Adam and Beau were busy out on the Pacific side, catching 4 Dorado and 3 catch and release Marlin. Looks like the Breeze family will be enjoying a nice Christmas dinner with their Dorado filets.

Jace and Melanie Horton along with their son Tate, all from Frisco, Texas enjoyed a half-day with the guys on TantRum. Tate's just a little guy, but he battled and bested an nice Dorado while Dad and Mom caught 2 more and caught and released a nice Striped Marlin.

Ralph Hartman and his wife Nan, enjoyed their second of two days on the water, as part of our Play and Stay Package. After getting their Marlin on day one, they were ready to fill the coolers and Omar thought they had the best shot with Dorado. They headed an hour north on the Pacific side and really got into the Dorado landing 11 for the day.

Lucas and Elke Folk all the way from Austria are here in Cabo with one thing in mind, Marlin. Lucas planned this trip about six months ago, and while here for a week, they are fishing 6 days with Javier on Rum Runnin. Day One went very well, with 2 Catch and Release Marlin, 1 Dorado and 2 Skipjack Tuna.

Sunday fishing....

Fishing has been great as of late, and while the Marlin have been showing up in better numbers the last few weeks, the Dorado seemed to have returned as well. The guys have been primarily fishing the Pacific side, from the Lighthouse to Los Arcos and up into the Golden Gate area as well. Some days the Marlin are chasing bait on the surface, other days we are having to use the Lowrance Sonar's to find bait down deep.

Sam Chung, Kyung Cho, Sung Cho, and Kate Oh all from Chula Vista, California joined us for a day on the TantRum on Sunday. Serious Chargers fans, we had to get out and get hooked up and get back to the Marina in time for the 2pm kickoff. Everything went according to plan, and Sam's crew caught and released a Striped Marlin, caught a Yellowfin Tuna, and also caught 2 nice Mahi Mahi that they enjoyed at Mango Cantina while watching the game.

Mike Metz and his three kids, Grace, Austen and Casey from the Scottsdale area joined us for a day aboard the RedBeam. Austen and Casey are experienced saltwater fishermen, but it was Grace that we needed to get a Marlin. The Metz's had a quick start followed by a few slow hours, but the guys stuck with it and they finished with 2 Marlin and a Dorado. Congratulations to Grace, who caught and released her first Striped Marlin in under 20 minutes!!!

Pam and Everett Johnson from Texas Salwater Fishing Magazine were out on El Nuevo RedRum today for their second of two days. While things weren't quite as busy as day one, they did catch and release another 2 Marlin. Pam and Everett had great things to say about Captain Omar when they got back and said they were looking forward to doing a nice write up in their magazine about the trip. Look for the article in an upcoming edition of Texas Saltwater Fishing Magazine.

John and Nancy Baumgartner from South Bend, Indiana are great people and have some great friends back home. John and Nancy were treated to a two day fishing adventure here in Cabo by their good friend Don back home. Today they fished with Rum Runnin and caught 4 Dorado and 2 Striped Marlin.

Slow but still catching!

Fishing was a bit slow today. Guess the fish are watching their figures after all that eat’n on Thanksgiving. Nevertheless, all our boats caught something.

John, Elise, Bill and Jeanne from Missouri and Illinois stopped by our office yesterday afternoon looking to book a last minute charter. All our boats were booked but they trusted us to select an awesome partner boat and they were not disappointed. Captain Salvador took them out on his 28’ and they caught 5 Dorado weighing between twenty and thirty five pounds on the sea of Cortez, eight miles from shore. It was their first time deep sea fishing and they enjoyed themselves so much they decided to come back tomorrow to fish some more!

Were we mistaken? Or are the Marlin really here?

I, for one, was on pins and needles today. Have the Striped Marlin really arrived in the crazy numbers that we saw last year or was yesterday an anomoly?

It's true, they are back, who knows for how long, but they are here folks.

Jeffrey and Patti Kaser were on board Rum Runnin again today for their second charter and they got to experience some great action today. Jeff and Patti played host to their friends Bill and Barb Taylor today, and everyone was able to get in on the action. Captain Javier was all over the fish today bringing in 6 catch and release Marlin, 9 Sierra and 1 Dorado.

Rich and Marianne Walz along with Greg and Jennifer Burke all from New York joined us for a day on the water aboard RedBeam today. While Cesar wasn't able to entice as many Marlin into taking bait as some of the other guys today, the Walz's and Burke's had a very successful day on the water, as they finished with 2 catch and release Marlin and 2 Dorado.

Lou Wheeler from Sacramento, California was fishing by himself today aboard TantRum with Ramon and Juan and they had a great day on the water. I think Lou could have used another body to help with the Marlin today, but he was able to bring in 3 catch and release Marlin by himself while also catching a Dorado.

They Bryant brothers, Nathan, Matt, Dennis and Tim along with John Biro and Bill Bell finished up their second day on the water with us today aboard El Nuevo. Captain Alex, who is off for Christmans vacation starting tomorrow was eager to get out on the water for what will be his final day of the year today. Alex finished off a great year with one of his best days, hooking the guys up with 3 Dorado and 6 catch and release Striped Marlin. As with all of our guys, Alex works very very hard day in and day out, 8-10 hours a day making sure our clients have every opportunity to catch fish. Special thanks to our crews who make it all happen out on the water.

Sunday Session...THEY HAVE ARRIVED!!!!

Today was the day everyone, the Marlin have finally arrived. While they are a bit late, we are more than happy to welcome the Striped Marlin to Cabo San Lucas. Sure we have been catching, 1 or 2 per day on some boats, maybe a day here and there with 3 or even 4 but nothing like this time last year when we were getting 6,8 and even 12 Marlin some days. Late October 2008 we saw a huge congregation of Striped Marlin make their way to Cabo, following an even bigger congregation of bait. Well they might be over a month late, but they have arrived. (Just as we suspected they would.)

Andrew Micalizzi and Felipe Benedict are down from New Jersey, after meeting John Donovan at the Atlantic City Boat Show last year. John told them all about RedRum and the phenominal Striped Marlin fishing we were enjoying at the time. The guys were all for it and wanted to come down and fish with RedRum. Day one, as you may have read, the guys limited out on Dorado and had a great day with Alex and Manuel aboard El Nuevo RedRum. After getting the Dorado out of the way, today it was time for some Marlin. I was talking to the guys in the morning and telling them that any day, the Marlin could arrive and make things crazy out there. Well any day was today. When the boat pulled back into the Marina they had the Blue and Red flags flying, with an amazing 9 Striped Marlin Catch and Releases, and 2 Dorado for a little icing on top. They guys were absolutely amazed with what they witnessed out there. Bait balls and boats, Marlin all over the place, everyone jockeying for position. Pure chaos, somewhat organized. The guys had a few double hook-ups throughout the day, and said that there wasn't a 10 minute lull in the action all day. Congrats on your first...second, third and fourth Marlin.

Scott Briles and Katie Kenney from Oceanside, California were the other lucky ones to be out on the water today for the "changing of the guard," so to speak. Scott and Katie each got a Striped Marlin catch and release and then decided to switch their focus to Dorado. Captain Ramon was as excited as anyone to see the Marlin arrive in great numbers, but when the client wants to catch something else, he understands who is in charge. Scott and Katie finished up with 2 Striped Marlin and 6 Dorado.

Dorado Saturday

Nathan, Dennis, John, Buir, Matt and Tim went out on our 33’ El Nuevo with Captain Alex and Mate Manuel. They fished Golden Gate, two to three miles from shore and caught 8 Dorado weighing between twenty five and thirty pounds.

Andrew and Felipe from New Jersey went out on our 28’ Tantrum with Captain Ramon and Mate Juan. They caught 6 twenty pound Dorado by 9am and went looking for Marlin. They found plenty and fought one but it eventually was lost. No worries, these guys are going out again tomorrow.

Ron and friends came off of their cruise ship this morning and went out on our 32’ RumRunnin with Captain Javier for a half day charter. They caught a nice big Dorado.

Hi - It's in the mid-fifties here in New Hampshire which isn't bad for this time of year. My husband and I wanted to thank you for our terrific fishing charter on November 18. Our Captain and his mate, Juan were TERRIFIC! They say the night life in Cabo is wild, but it's nothing compared to the marine life we saw on the water! Whales, dolphins and more! I am attaching a couple of pictures of the Dorado that my husband snagged! Marlin are still waiting for us so we'll be back!Karen & Scott Pollock, New Hampshire

Killer airfare right now...

If you are ready to get down here and take advantage of the fabulous fishing right now, here is a bit of an incentive. US Airways has some killer deals right now for the month of December if you book by next monday. You can find the fares by looking at the e-saver section of their website.

$108 each way from DFW, San Diego, Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose and Seattle
$95 each way from San Francisco.
$85 from Vegas.
$75 from Los Angeles.

On top of the airfare, for the first 5 people that book one of these deals and books 2 days of fishing with us, I will give you a 3rd day of fishing free.

*Some restrictions will apply.

Playing Catch(up)

Let's try to get you guys caught up on the latest and greatest in and around Cabo waters the past few days. First of all, my theory that everything is happening a month late this year is really proving itself. It is December and we still are seeing Big Big Marlin being caught. We had a Blue that was in the 300-400lb range this week and a local boat caught a whopper over 800lbs the other day. We are seeing more and more Marlin every day, and as soon as the candy (mackeral) arrive the Striped Marlin frenzy will be back on. Those of you that heard about, or got the chance to fish Cabo last year in November and December will have your shot again this year. I have a feeling it is going to be late December, January and Febuary though. We are just now seeing the water temps cool down and bit, and this could be a great indicator of the fantastic Billfishing to come.

Ed Dodds and his crew from Delaware were down for a few days of fun and relaxation, escaping the winter of the northeast and spent two days with us on the water. Day 1 the guys fished with Kilito and Cesar aboard the RedBeam and had a blast. They got the Marlin to bite and were able to catch and release 3 nice Stripers. The crew also put them on the Dorado, of which they also got 3. Day 2 the guys fished with Ramon and Manuel aboard El Nuevo RedRum and while they didn't have the same success as day 1, but they did land a few Mahi's.

Hugh and Shara-Lynne from Lloydminster, Alberta Canada fished aboard El Nuevo on Sunday and had a heck of a day. We are really getting in to a great time of year with the mixed bag that is out there right now. 3-4 species in a day is not uncommon right now and that is a ton of fun for anglers. Shara and Hugh witnessed this first hand with a 9ft Striped Marlin release, a boated Wahoo that went close to 60lbs and 3 Dorado. Killer day guys, we are stoked for you.

Robert and Kindra Ross from Framingham, Massachusetts are down in Cabo for a week and are spending 3 days on the water with us. Robert has been getting a workout on the water, each day coming back and claiming that his arms were burning. I imagine they are, many people forget about all the muscles you use when fighting a Marlin and also forget that they haven't used those muscles in a while. Robert has caught and released 4 Marlin over the first two days and a bunch of Dorado as well. Maybe some Tuna or Wahoo on day 3 guys?

Jeff and Patti Kaser enjoyed their first of two days on the water yesterday with Captain Javier aboard Rum Runnin. After catching and releasing a Marlin, Javier was able to find the Dorado for Jeff and Patti as well. The Kaser's will be back on the 7th for their second day and may find that things look a little different on Rum Runnin. This morning we pulled her out of the water to apply a fresh coat of bottom paint and touch up a few spots where Marlin bills had done a number on the gelcoat. You have to remember, these boats take a beating down here, fishing as hard as we do, as many days a year as we do. That being said, we always do our best to keep everything in as best shape as possible.

-Ryan

Weekend Fish

Jay, Jordan, William, Christopher and Pat from Lincoln, Nebraska fished with Captain Javier. They fished Golden Gate on the Pacific, three miles from shore and caught 5 Dorado weighing around twenty five pounds.

Ken arrived early this morning at our office, no reservation, hoping he could score a trip with us and luckily ReelRum was available. He had fished the past week with two different sport fishing companies and after a day with Captain Omar and Mate Americo, Ken told me he would be coming back to fish with us every time he came back to Cabo. They fished Golden Gate, seven miles from shore and caught and released 2 Striped Marlin weighing a hundred pounds and the second close to two hundred pounds. He also caught 2 twenty five pound Dorado and a twenty pound Wahoo.

Jeff, Clarence, Robert, Susan, Bonnie and Robin from California went out on our 33’ El Nuevo with Captain Alex and fished Golden Gate close to shore. They caught 6 twenty to twenty five pound Dorado and said they had the hardest working Captain there was.

Napper charter on our 28' - Nov. 18th

Van fished with Hugh and Teresa on our 28' partner boat on November 18th:

Ryan - thanks for a great charter on the "Anzuelo II" last Wednesday, Nov 18th. While we didn't hook up any marlins, it wasn't for the lack of trying by the crew. We did have a wonderful day on the water, and we caught several large mahi mahis. On the way bck to the dock with the clock running down, the captain charged over to the beach and hooked up two rooster fish, the first ones that I've ever seen. Best of all, you managed to find me some great fishing companions to share the expenses and the experience of a terrific day on the water off Cabo San Lucas.

Feliz Thanksgiving!!!

HAPPY Thanksgiving, especially to all of our faithful readers checking in on our report even today!

Keith and his kids Alexandria, Evan and Molly went out for the second time this week on our 33’ El Nuevo with Captain Alex and Mate Manuel. They caught at least 10 Dorado weighing between twenty five and thirty pounds and caught and released a hundred and forty pound Striped Marlin. They had just passed the lighthouse nearing the pacific when they landed a major quadruple hook-up. They reeled so many in that they lost count! They fished Golden Gate on the Pacific side, two to three miles from shore.

Joe and kids went out on our 28’ partner boat with Captain Salvador. They came in on the Holland America and spent a few hours fishing and catching Marlin. They caught two Striped Marlin weighing around a hundred and forty pounds and released one of them.

Brooks, Kase and Jill from Montgomery, Texas went out on our 32’ RumRunnin with Captain Javier. They fished a half day out by point 95 on the sea of Cortez and caught and released a hundred pound Sailfish.

Michael, Carl and Chas went out on our 32’ RedBeam and caught and released 2 Striped Marlin with Captain Cesar.

Robert and friends went out on our 28’ ReelRum with Captain Omar and Mate Americo. They fished 95 on the sea of Cortez, sixteen miles from shore and caught a twenty five pound Dorado and also caught and released a hundred and thirty pound Striped Marlin.

Wednesday Report

Another great day on the water for the boys. Most of the guys are still heading up the Pacific, Cesar however fished the 95 today and said things looked excellent out there. I guess the proof is in the pudding, lets see how he did.

Cesar and Kilito fished with Scott Fulton and his boy Trey, as well as Scott's parents Charlie and Zara. Special shout out to Charlie and Zara who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. As previously mentioned, Cesar headed to the 95 where he quickly got on the Dorado, hooking up 6 and catching and releasing a nice Sailfish. Not sure it is enough to pull the rest of the guys from the Pacific, but it gives everyone something to think about.

Geoff and Emily Wyonzek finished up today with their second day on the water and today they headed out in search of Tuna. Omar and Americo were all for heading out in search of Tuna and after getting about 20 miles off Cabo towards the Jaime Bank, they found the birds and the Porpoise working. Didn't take long after that, and they finished the day with 7 Yellowfina and a 50lb Sailfish.

Jeremy and Jung Yun, Will and Jung O'Donnell, Matt Hunter and Jeremy Blackburn were our guests aboard El Nuevo RedRum today and they had a great day on the water. Alex and Manuel had a great day on the water and had their clients on the fish all day long. They caught and released 3 Striped Marlin and also catching 3 Dorado, while missing a few others.

John and Nila Ventress, Ron, Ryan and Julia Bruns fished with Ziggy today and had a good day on the water. They were impressed with how hard the crew worked all day, and while they didn't get the Marlin they were looking for today, they did hook up with 3 Dorado.

Happy Turkey Day to all our friends and family from the United States! Hopefully you all have a little Dorado or Tuna in the fridge you can thaw out and enjoy tomorrow.

-Ryan

Tuesday Report...

Keith Carpenter and his crew joined Alex and Manuel aboard El Nuevo RedRum, our 33' Bertram. The Carpenters won the mixed bag award, bringing in 2 Striped Marlin, 2 Yellowfin Tuna and 3 Dorado. Congrats guys, see you again on Thursday, maybe you can catch a pelican aka Mexican Turkey.

Roberto Rusnack was back at again for day 2, and for the first time in 3 years Robert allowed someone else on the boat with him today. Selfish is certainly not the word to describe him, but Robert likes to catch fish and usually doesn't like to share. Congrats to him today for inviting a buddy along. They had a great day with the crew of TantRum, bringing in 3 Dorado and 1 Marlin.

Geoff and Emily Wyonzek of Memphis joined us for their first of two days on the water. Captain Omar and mate Americo were their hosts on ReelRum. They had a phenominal day one and almost won the mixed bag award. Emily got loose on the only Yellowfin of the day, while Geoff got his first Marlin. In between, they were also able to bring in 5 Dorado.

You'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge on both the Zell and Lane parties today, I was a bit under the weather and didn't get a chance to stick around and see how they did.

-Ryan

Monday Report...

Barrett Schott and his buddy Corey Keller joined us for a day on the water with Rum Runnin. Captain Javier was at the helm and headed back to the Los Arcos/Migrino area he was at yesterday, hoping for the same success. The guys each got to catch and release a Striped Marlin and they also caught 8 Dorado, 4 of which they released.

Angela Miller and Tracey Purdy are visiting all the way from Canada. They were the second group of two ladies fishing together in as many days. This is a trend we would love to see continue. Sportfishing isn't just for boys you know. These ladies certainly proved that bringing in 1 Marlin, 1 Yellowfin and 2 Dorado.

Steve Lane and his crew are visiting from Cape Coral, Florida and he had one thing on his mind; Marlin. Coming from Florida, these folks weren't used to the amount of Marlin we have in the area and took full advantage, catching 2 Marlin and releasing them both. These guys also caught 3 Dorado.

Our good buddy Roberto Rusnack is back at it for his annual pilgramage for Marlin. Day one=Success.

Wayne Andrew and the Pure Fishing guys finished up their fifth and final day on the water today with Alex and Manuel on El Nuevo. They hadn't quite met their quota on Striped Marlin, so today they went out and caught and released 4 more! While also bringing in 2 nice Dorado.

Things are heating up nicely,
Ryan

Sunday Report...

Jerry and Kim Smith finished up their second of two days with RedRum today once again fishing with Captain Javier. Javier headed up the Pacific coast about 17 miles to a spot on the coastline called Migrino. He got right into the action and kept the rods bent all day. 3 Striped Marlin and 4 Dorado when it was said and done.

Judi Scott and Cindy Halbgewoks both from Cambridge, Maryland joined us today aboard ReelRum. Captain Americo found the fish to be a littly picky in his neck of the woods today, but was still able to get Judi and Cindy hooked up with 2 Dorado. They took a few filets to enjoy for dinner and as per usual, we sent them over to see Israel at Misiones de Kino. Nice to have met you ladies, come back and see us.

Josh and Linea Morris of Washington and Jim and Kindle McCauley of Montana joined us aboard the RedBeam today. Captain Cesar was at the helm and he headed straight for the Golden Gate. While the fishing has been great lately, I think every Captain secretly wants to be the first to have a truly phenominal day at Golden Gate. It was this time last year that folks were catching upwards of a dozen Marlin a day at the Gate. While Sunday wasn't the day, they still did very well catching 2 Striped Marlin and 4 Dorado.

Wayne Andrew and his guests from Pure Fishing hit the Los Arcos area for their fourth day on the water. Captain Alex and his Mate Manuel have built up a pretty good working relationship with Wayne and his guests and they are all fishing great. Today they had 3 Marlin and 6 Dorado.

Another great day,
Ryan

Where you been Ryan??

OK, I will try to play catch up a bit here and get you all updated on what's been happening. I was out of the office and on the water last week, while we had the guys from "The Fishing Crew" in town. They were filming a TV show and we got some phenominal tape after having two great days on the water. On day one, my boat (which of course won the mini-tourney we had,) brought 4 different species to the boat. We had Wahoo, Dorado, Tuna and Striped Marlin. That was a first for me down here and I have had hundreds of days on the water. Pretty special. On day two, we had Professional Angler Ryan Weekly on monster fish for over 3 hours. We never got a look at it, but we are pretty sure we had a Marlin, and also pretty sure this fish was in the 700-900lb range. Ryan was a monster, fighting with all he had, but in the end, the big fish won. The amazing thing about this fish was that we were fishing a new lure from our friend Darrell at Ballyhoo Lures and the lure was hit while we were putting it out. We hadn't even finished setting it in place and getting the drag set, it literally got bit as soon as it hit the water. Amazing! Anyway, I got back to the boring stuff (the office work) on Sunday and I have been super busy and then I got hit with a little Montezuma's. That being said, and without further ado, here is the report from the last few days.

Love from Ryan and Hilary Leifheit from St Louis, Missouri who fished with Americo and Omar(pictured) on our 28' ReelRum on November 18th:

Just wanted to say thanks for a great day of fishing on the Reelrum with Amerigo and Omar on wendesday! We went out last year and caught 12 sriped marlin and a sailfish and I was worried we would have trouble topping that trip. This year we got a wahoo, five dorado, and a 304 pound, 10 foot 4 inch blue marlin that took two hours to land! I'll send a photo of that one.

We brought in 2 150 lb Marlins, 20 Dorados, 11 Tunas, a couple of Amberjacks, and most special of all a 120lb Sailfish. The Redrum crews worked hard to give us a special week. They even threw in kite fishing which none of us had seen first hand.

We got a couple of great fish pics that are attached.

Monday's action

David Gladney and his buddies Mark Mathson and Jason Slovensky both of Forth Worth, Texas were down for a day of fishing aboard Rum Runnin'. David has been a client of ours for a few years now and wanted to share the RedRum experience with a few friends. Mark and Jason both got hooked up with Striped Marlin, and they crew finished with 8 Dorado as well. See you again in January David!

Another repeat client of ours Mark Moulton and his wife Carol, hosted Bob Gale and Bill Jame, everyone hailing from Washington state. Mark was down here last year at this time and for those of you who read this report often will remember that this time last year we were bringing in Marlin by the dozen. Well this year it is Dorado and Mark and his crew finished with 8 nice fish this year. Thanks for coming back to Redrum and Cabo San Lucas, hope to see you next year.

Stanley and Laura Honeycutt fished with us today aboard ReelRum and had a great day on the water. Captain Omar and Mate Americo put them on the fish from the start and they finished with 5 Dorado.

Rad Trascher and George Huye along with their lovely wives were back at it again today with a day on the water aboard our 33' Bertram, El Nuevo RedRum. Alex and Manuel took very good care of our friends from Louisiana, putting them on 8 Dorado and a nice Striped Marlin, again at the last minute. George and Rad were impressed by Captain Alex who saw a big bait ball about 200 feet below the boat, using his sonar equipment. Manuel rigged up a fat Caballito and sent it down. While it was George's turn on the rod, he thought it might be a big Tuna and wasn't interested in a long fight. Rad was quick to grab the bent rod and to his delight it was a nice 200lb Striped Marlin. It was a pleasure hosting you guys and hope to see you all again in the near future.

Sunday Report

The boys are fishing two different aread primarily. For those that want Tuna action, the Captains have been heading to Gordo Banks to see what the Sardine fishing can raise. Those that want to target Marlin and Dorado have been heading up the Pacific toward an area we call Los Arcos. Water temps are still warm, in the low 80's and we are still waiting on the Mackeral to arrive and the accompanying Marlin.

Today we had Rad Trascher along with his wife Berry and George Huye along with his wife Jessica visiting from Baton Rouge. Rad and George are heavily involved with CCA Louisiana and after sending countless groups down to stay at our condos and fish with us as part of our Play and Stay package it was time to see what the experience was like for themselves. Rad, George and the ladies really liked the accomodations and spent the first day or so getting acquinted with Cabo and taking our recommendations on where to eat and different things to do. Rad made a comment that each meal he had here was better than the previous, especially the finale where we cooked up some of their catch. For their first day on the water, they fished the 28' TantRum with Juan and Ramon. While the fishing has been fantastic as of late, they had a relatively slow day on the water, catching only one Dorado, before hooking a last minute Marlin, Rad's first! Hopefully tomorrow we can show them what Cabo fishing really has to offer.

Larry, John and Mike Guthrie from Washington state, fished with us today aboard RedBeam with Lupe and Muneca. These guys got into the fish right from the start and finished up with some great Dorado. While the average Dorado has been in the 25-35 lb range lately, these guys came back with 8 really nice fish, certainly above the average. They too, hooked up with a Stripey late and came back flying a Marlin flag.

Greg Page, Howard Water and Joe Sowell of Tennesee spent their second day on the water today with Omar and Americo aboard ReelRum. After catching Wahoo, Tuna and Dorado on day one, they finished up on day two with a ton of Dorado. They caught more than the limit and had to throw a few back, but had 11 fish to the boat when it was said and done.

Long time clients and friends, Jane and Charles Kitchens hosted their friends Lydia and Marvin Strakes for their first of two days on the water. While they only caught 1 Striped Marlin on the day, they did clean up on the Dorado bringing back 4 grocery sized bags of filets back. Their experience showed off with some real nice fish, 3 or 4 of which went over the 50lb mark.

Love from Clients

Hola Team Redrum, just a note to let you know that we thoroughly enjoyed our day on Tantrum Saturday Nov. 7. Juan and Ramon worked very hard to get us some fish, they showed great expertise in spotting, enticing and hooking the 2 marlin we boated. It was truly the thrill of a lifetime to land a marlin and I doubt we could have achieved it without their help and coaching. We cant say enough about the treatment Team RedRum provided throughout the entire process and cant wait to fish with you again!

Thank You, Tom, Debbie, Angela and Dave.

Mondays Update

Today was the first day in the 2009 IGFA Rolex World Championships the 5th and final tournament to come to Cabo San Lucas in the last 5 weeks. The IGFA is an invitation only tournament with teams from 50 different countries around the world. Since May 2008, the last time the event was held, teams from all over the world have competed in 40-50 tournaments held in many different locales. The winning teams of these IGFA sponsored tournaments are invited to Cabo San Lucas, to fish with Cabo skippers and local Cabo boats for 4 days. Teams are paired up with 31' to 38' foot boats randomly, and no team will fish the same boat twice. This is a strict release only tournament with awards in Billfish, Dorado, Wahoo and Tuna categories. Three of our boats, Grey Light, El Nuevo RedRum and Pescado III are participating and all did well on day one. Alex from El Nuevo fished with a team from Brazil, and said they had a great time conversing in Spanish and Portuguese with each other, learning the differences between the two languages. Alex had a slow day catching only one billfish but also releasing several Dorado.

On Tantrum today, with Ramon and Juan, we had a share with Tommy Tran and Alice Ly, hooking up with Jeff Roberts. All went well for the new friends and they shared the day on the water bringing in 8 Dorado and 1 Striped Marlin.

Rick Navarro from Kansas is down visiting Los Cabos and wanted a day on the water with one of our Panga skippers. Rick fished with Jose on Ana Isabel and had a hell of a day. After catching and releasing a Striped Marlin, Rick also brought in 2 Dorado and 2 Yellowfin Tuna.

Joe Kus from Illinois also fished by himself today, with Captain Cesar on the RedBeam. Joe spent the morning catching 10 Dorado, releasing 6 of them. Joe came back to the office and told me about the great day he had on the water.

633 Pound Black Marlin!!!

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 6TH
2009 Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament, RedRum Sportfishing Results

2nd Place Winner, 2nd day – 3rd Place Winner, overall
Team: # 49 Joe and Sal Catania
Boat: Tantrum
Crew: Captain Ramon and Mate Juan
Catch: 90 pound Tuna
Where: Punta Gorda, 3 millas from shore
Bait: Sardines

This win is great for us and especially for the crew on Tantrum. Captain Ramon received a promotion only a few weeks ago and went from being the Mate on our 33’ El Nuevo to Captain for our 28’ Tantrum. Juan is his Mate and brand new to our team though we’ve known him for many years. A great win for everyone; congratulations guys!

Last years winners, RedRum owners Ryan and John Donovan went out on our 53’ partner boat Missing Lenk and on day #2 of the tournament caught a big one. Unfortunately it was a 633 lb Black Marlin for which there was no division. Here’s a photo of Ryan and his Marlin. If only they had caught this baby two weeks ago during the Bisbees!!!

A group of friends and family fished on three of our partner boats as well on Friday though not as part of the tournament. Happy Halloween

Amanda and Billy from Houston, Texas fished with us today celebrating Billy’s 50th birthday. He came in the office this morning with a huge smile that every birthday boy should wake up with and pointed to all the fish we have on our walls. Billy wanted to catch at least one of each. Captain Ramon and Mate Juan got the couple out on the water and they hunted their prey. They fished the Pacific and caught 8 Dorado between fifteen and thirty pounds. I expected Billy to be disappointed upon his return to our office but instead he told me “That’s why they call it fishing and not catching.” What a great attitude. They proclaimed that they would just have to come back next year!

Robert, Jon and Bruce from Luisiana came back to fish a second day. They went out again on our 33’ partner boat OleOle with Captain Teo. They fished the Pacific and caught 8 Dorado weighing between ten and twenty five pounds

Dorado Day

Charles, Maryanne, John and Eyrhen went out on our 42’ partner boat with Captain Fiden. Part of the group unfortunately got sick on the way out and had to come back. Two went back out and caught a thirty pound Dorado at Cerros de Arena on the Pacific side.

Kevin and Kathy from Nevada went out on our 28’ ReelRum with Captain Omar and Mate Americo. They fished the Pacific and caught a small Dorado. When it was Kathy’s turn a hundred and forty pound Striped Marlin bit the line, fought for about twenty minutes and after loosing the match, was released.

Kyle and Rachel from Okanogan, Washington went out on one of our Panga’s and fished inshore. They caught 5 fifteen to twenty five pound Dorado by the Lighthouse on the Pacific side.

Paul, Mark, Steve, Jim, Jerry and Harold, a group of brothers, cousins and uncles from the Pacific Northwest came down for the fourth time to fish the waters of Cabo. They fished on our 32’ RumRunnin and caught 5 Dorado weighing between twenty and thirty pounds. They fished San Cristobal on the Pacific side just three miles from shore.

Another Good Day

Mike and Karen from Spicewood, TX fished today with Captain Javier and Mate Marcial on our 32’ RumRunnin. They want to give a shout out to their friends David and Patty: “We wish you were here. We caught 10 Dorado between fifteen and twenty five pounds and unfortunately lost a Striped Marlin….oooops, sad”. They fished San Cristobal on the Pacific side, thirteen miles from the Marina and three miles from shore.

Sandy and Joe from Mountlake Terrace, WA fished on our 28’ Tantrum with Captain Ramon and Mate Manuel. They fished Margarita on the Pacific side, fifteen miles from the Cabo Marina and a mile or two from shore where water temperature was at eighty degrees. They caught 6 Dorado weighing between fifteen and thirty pounds and released two smaller ones.

Robert, Karen, Jon, Allison, Bruce and Melissa from Louisiana went out on our 33’ partner boat with Captain Teo. They fished the Pacific side and caught and released a hundred and fifty pound Striped Marlin, which Bruce caught, as well as a Sailfish caught by Allison. Wednesday Update

Joe Scamardo and his Italian Mob fished again today with us and wanted to get out and search for Tuna and Marlin after catching a bunch of Dorado yesterday. The guys fished hard and certainly put forth the effort. While they did see some Marlin they couldn't get any to bite. Great group of guys and it was a pleasure meeting everyone. Hopefully we see you guys back next year.

Greg Spreen and Jennifer Halverson were back on the water today aboard TantRum with Ramon and Juan. While they got into the Dorado again, catching 2, they also got into some billfish action. Greg wanted to go after some Tuna this morning, so I recommended making a big circular loop in the morning heading eventually towards Golden Gate. They spent about three hours looking for Tuna, and while they found some Porpoise, they couldn't get a Tuna bite. The good thing was, when they were ready to call it quits, they were close to the Golden Gate and they soon found some action. Greg caught a nice 99" Striped Marlin and another a bit smaller, plus the 2 Dorado.

Ken Moss and Jon Kendall were back on the water with Ulyses today on Grey Light. These guys came back excited as they thought they might have had a World Record catch on their hands. Fishing with 10lb test, Ken caught an estimated 120lb Sailfish, in less than 5 minutes!!! Unfortunately, there is no 10lb line class in the IGFA, it goes from 8lbs to 12lbs. The 12lb World Record for Pacific Sailfish was caught in Australia and weighed in at 170+lbs. World record or not, it was an impressive catch! The guys also got 3 more Dorado today, great day!!

Sumner and Andrea Brown from Weymouth, Massachusetts joined us today aboard AnzueloII. These guys had a great day with Captain Lupe catching a bunch of Dorado and Tuna. They weren't even sure how many they had, Sumner claimed, "I don't like eating them, just enjoy catching them." I know their are a few readers of this blog out there that would love to enjoy those filets! To each their own.

John Heitkamp, Mike Nickerson and Gary Johnson fished with Javier today and they too caught a bunch of Tuna and Dorado. John also mentioned he only wanted a few filets for Missiones de Kino and was going to leave the rest with his buddy Wally here in town. Lucky Wally, I know. John has been fishing with RedRum for about 15 years and is probably our longest tenured client. After his day on the water John told me about his collection of RedRum gear, hats, t-shirts, flags, etc. He claims to have about 45 RedRum hats from over the years and says his wife plans to take the logo's from all the hats and shirts and make a quilt for us. Too cool huh, can't wait to display that in the office. Great seeing you John.

Last but not least we had William Ott and Joanne Davis with us aboard ReelRum with Captain Omar. William and Joanne were the first ones here this morning, beating me to the office. I guess you could say they were excited! And, they had every reason to be, they must have known they were going to battle a Marlin and 8 Dorado today!

Another great day,

Ryan

Tuesday's update...

Chris and Cathy Phillips along with Jay and Vicky Harrwood fished with us today aboard Solmar Uno with Captain Freddy and Mate Wes. These guys had a great day, catching 7 Dorado. They had a nice 35lb Wahoo up to the side of the boat, but the fish took off right when they went to gaff it and it got away. Oh well, can't catch them all.

Captain Steve Peterson joined us today from Spanish Fork, Utah, coming off the Mariner of the Sea Royal Carribean Cruise Ship. Capt. Steve and his crew didn't get on board until 9:30am, but were still able to bring in 4 Dorado with Captain Javier showing Steve a few of the local tricks.

Dave Olsen and Scott Moen of Minnesota joined us today on TantRum with Captain Ramon and Mate Juan. These guys were lined up for two days of fishing, but after Dave tweaked a shoulder, (probably reeling in all the fish!,) one day was enough. The guys had their hands full, catching 7 nice Dorado.

Ivo and Annie Zulian were back at it again today, once again fishing with Cesar on the RedBeam. They had another successful day on the water, catching 6 Dorado. Annie and Ivo decided to have some of the fish Smoked and donated the rest to the crew. I know they have at least one relative back in Canada that was looking forward to them bringing home some filets (he sent an email to make sure I knew.) Hopefully everyone enjoys their catch and has as much fun eating it as they did catching it.

Christina Bastis and Michael Mcguire from Scarsdale, New York, fished with us today on ReelRum. Captain Omar was their guide and he did a great job putting them on the fish. They had 7 Dorado by the time they made their way back to the Marina.
